Meningococcal disease

Meningococcal disease is a serious bacterial infection that often starts with flu-like symptoms. In most cases (about 80%), a distinctive rash appears that doesn’t fade when pressed. The infection spreads through saliva, meaning activities like kissing or sharing drinks can pass it on.

In New Zealand, meningococcal disease is mainly caused by bacteria from groups A, B, C, W, and Y. It can lead to meningitis, which inflames the protective membranes around the brain and spinal cord, or septicemia (blood poisoning), which in severe cases can result in organ failure and even limb loss.

The disease is most common in young children (under five), teenagers, and young adults—especially those in close living environments like hostels, boarding schools, or university halls.
