Why It's Important To Treat Scabies

Scabies (pronounced skay-bees) is a skin infection caused when a tiny insect (called a mite) burrows under the skin surface, causing a very itchy, tiny red rash on the arms and legs.

It can be confused with dermatitis or hives.

The infection is easily spread from person to person through direct skin contact or through shared bedding or clothing.

It’s important to know that scabies is not due to poor hygiene. Anyone can get scabies, even the cleanest people. Washing with soap will not prevent or cure it.

If you or someone you care for has a severe itch that’s particularly bad at night, has a rash that looks like tiny curving tracks, or has been in contact with another itchy person – see your Pharmacist or doctor.

How scabies is treated

Scabies must be treated with a special medicated lotion or cream as it won't go away on its own. You can get this medication from your local Life Pharmacy or on prescription from your doctor.

Be sure that everyone who lives in the same household with the infected person gets treated. The itch may continue for weeks even though the mite is gone. See your doctor if the itch continues longer than 6 weeks.
