Recognising And Treating Vaginal Thrush

Vaginal thrush is a common yeast infection caused by an overgrowth of Candida albicans.

It affects most women at some stage. Common symptoms include itching or irritation around the vagina, burning or stinging when weeing, and/or vaginal discharge.

Seeing your doctor is the only way to know for sure if you have vaginal thrush. The signs and symptoms are a lot like symptoms of sexually transmitted infection so it’s a good idea to go to the doctor for a confirmed diagnosis.

Mild thrush can be treated with a short course of antifungal medication. Symptoms should clear up within a week or so. You may need a longer course of treatment if your thrush is difficult to treat or keeps coming back.

For some women, vaginal thrush is more difficult to treat and tends to occur quite frequently, despite treatment.

Some thrush medications can be bought from your pharmacy; others are available on prescription from your doctor.

Your Life Pharmacist can speak to you in private about your symptoms and recommend a product that’s right for you or refer you to your doctor if necessary.
