Love your Omegas

Fatty acids like Omega-3 and 6 are essential for good health, yet our body can’t produce them by itself and eating enough of the right foods to get the doses we need can be tricky. These essential fatty acids are found in the outer membrane of every cell in the body. They play an important part in many body functions, from nerve function, circulatory health, heart health, to brain function and more.

Optimal Omega

The World Health Organisation recognises the optimum ratio of Omega-6 to Omega-3 to be 3:1.

In a typical Western diet, Omega-6 is much higher than Omega-3 with an average ratio of between 10:1 and 20:1. Unfortunately, this means that many circulatory and other related health conditions are more common in Western societies, as a result of too much Omega-6. This is likely caused by excess refined foods, dairy and a lack of whole foods.

A balance of omegas is important to maintain optimum health. Through adjusting our diet to allow more natural intake of essential fatty acids, we can improve our cellular health and maximise long-term vitality.

Foods rich in Omega-3s include fish like Salmon, Mackerel or Tuna; nuts and seeds like Flaxseed, Chia Seeds or Walnuts and plant oils such as Flaxseed Oil, Soybean Oil, and more recently discovered, Hemp Seed Oil.
