Why Face Mists are your new #BFF this Winter

Face mists are fast becoming the go-to in the battle to fight moisture loss and they’re winning.

These vitamin and mineral packed elixirs are the ideal treatment for winter skin. Whether they incorporated into your morning routine, in the evening after the gym or a night time shower, or as an essential item to carry around and spritz, mists will satisfy thirsty faces all day and all night. Some people use toners as facial mists, and others go straight to facial sprays and mists. Either way they’re an item you’ll fall in love with.

So let’s take a closer look at face mists and why they’ll keep your lustrous glow all winter long.

1. Restore skin’s natural balance

Our face is covered by a thin protective barrier called the acid mantle, which is slightly acidic sitting at between pH 4.5 and 5.5. The acid mantle comprises our own natural oils as well as the lactic acids and amino acids from our sweat, which together create a film to lock in moisture and protect skin from moisture loss, irritants or infection.

When this film is compromised by products such as some makeup, SD alcohol like methylated spirits, or alkaline soaps (when your skin feels “squeaky” clean!), or natural elements such as wind, water and cold weather, we can inadvertently alter the pH balance of our skin.

While our acid mantle will naturally restore itself in anywhere between 15 minutes or more than 12 hours a balancing, a hydrating mist or toner can reset our skin’s natural pH levels. The Trilogy Hydrating Mist Toner contains delicious natural ingredients aloe vera leaf juice, geranium oil, rose flower oil and lavender oil, which in combination are a certain quick fix to any skin needing protection and balance.

2. Moisture loss

The acid mantle, which locks in moisture content, becomes very comprised in winter. It is “attacked” by environmental conditions like chilling winds, low humidity caused by central heating and the frequency of travelling between hot and cold temperatures. Facial mists provide a protective barrier in place of the acid mantle to prevent moisture loss, moisture that our skin naturally produces.

Eau Thermale Avène Thermal Spring Water is one of the most popular facial mists the world over for its soothing benefits on sensitive skin. This is due to its intensive formulation using thermal spring water that wraps a thin, layer of protection over vulnerable skin. Because thermal waters come from deep underground they contain beneficial trace minerals including calcium and the antioxidant selenium, which fight free radical damage and cell degradation. Another gem is the purse-sized La Roche-Posay Thermal Spring Water ideal for easily irritated skin.

And we love Estee Lauder Micro Essence Aquaceutical Mist which is your skin’s best friend when it comes to dipping and diving into different temperatures this winter. No matter if you’re in a drying, heated room, outside in the humidity and rain, or the chill of a windy wintry walk, you’ll be protected by this mist’s light vapour hydration boosted by this lush product’s concentrated micro-nutrient bio-ferment.

As well as locking in your skin’s moisture, facial mists increase hydration when used in conjunction with your daily moisturiser application. This is in part because ingredients in mists and toners enhance the benefits of the ingredients contained in moisturisers. Facial mists supplement skin’s hydration, ideal during travel, excessive exposure to heating or air conditioning (which are both drying), and in summer, they’re a super cooling moisture boost when they’re left in the fridge to cool between use.

We love the super hydrating, ultra-fine spraying and long wearing Elizabeth Arden Eight hour Hydrating Mist ideal for a spritz in the morning before work, or in readying for a night on the town. This gorgeous mist contains natural goodies and potent antioxidants to regenerate skin such as açaí and mangosteen. It’s packed full of anti-inflammatory, anti-aging, and protective properties, as well as pomegranate fruit extract which is known to reverse skin damage and apple leaf extract which soothes irritated skin.

And excuse us while we obsess over the two other super hydrating products Clinique Moisture Surge Face Spray and Pixi by Petra Glow Mist. Clinique’s gorgeous spritz promises the healing powers of aloe with a moisture boost to relieve and hydrate thirsty skin while rebalancing pH. Perfect under or on top of makeup ready to slay the day. And Pixi by Petra Glow Mist delivers to restore healthy, youthful radiance thanks to a magic combination of 13 natural oils enriched with the superior healing powers of propolis, aloe vera and fruit extracts for that dewy finish every time.

Whether as a primer to ready skin for makeup, or used as a setting spray over makeup, facial mists not only enhance the benefits of other moisture and antioxidant rich products, but they can make your makeup last longer! Facial mists can plump skin or even close large pores giving the appearance of clear skin. The La Roche-Posay Serozinc Zinc Sulfate Solution is ideal to tighten pores and reduce the signs of acne, eczema or irritated skin, while mattifying skin to avoid that niggly greasy shine.

The name says it all, Lancôme Fit It Forget It Setting Spray is a whole lot of wonderful in a bottle. This keeps makeup on (and not floating down your face!) and keeps your makeup and skin refreshed when you go for that extra spritz later in the day. Nothing but win!
